Why visit the Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unbroken volcanic caldera in the world, 260 square kilometres of floor ringed by walls 600 metres high. Around 25,000 large animals live inside, and they rarely leave.
That makes it the surest place in Tanzania to see the Big Five, often in a single morning. Black rhino graze the open grass, lions lie by the track, and flamingos line the soda lake at the centre.

Best time to visit

Half a day on the floor covers the highlights, with a morning being the prime time. You sleep on the rim before or after, and it is almost always paired with the Serengeti and Tarangire rather than visited alone.
Visiting the crater: what to know
- One steep road descends to the floor and another climbs out, so you commit to a session
- Go at dawn. The light is best and the crowds build by mid-morning
- No camps sit on the floor, so you stay on the rim or nearby Karatu
- It is a conservation area shared with Maasai herders, not a fenced park
